“But time makes you bolder
Even children get older
And I’m gettin’ older, too …
And if you see my reflection
In the snow-covered hills
Well, the landslide will bring it down …”
At a time in her life when she was facing difficult choices, Stevie Nicks wrote those words. She was only 27, and yet somehow, she was able to put pen to these feelings. Yes, it is about the inevitability of growing older, but it is a hopeful song too. We are all once youth, and then one day we are not. That is the thing about life. It keeps moving forward to the future whether we will it to or not. It is as unstoppable as that landslide. One day we are young with children in our arms. The constant tug of life pulls us in so many directions that some days it seems insurmountable. But children get older, and one day they are walking out the door to seek their own version of life and not too far behind them follow the grandchildren. For this, we must be grateful.
The thing about this song is that its message keeps resonating with a voice that only grows stronger over the years. The older generations pass and the younger ones take their place. One day we are 27 and filled with wild dreams of the future, and the next we are saying good bye to that youth. In that inevitable way of time, our parents leave us, and we become the older generation sharing their wisdom along with our own.
The youthful Stevie Nicks could not have known how influential her words would become to her generation and the generations to follow. The words “Time makes you bolder” is always uplifting somehow. It has encouraged so many to face the challenges of growing old with a sense of pride. We are stronger because of how we have chosen to live. We are flawed and we are human, but we are wonderful too. I must have heard the song “Landslide” a thousand times, and the imagery of mountains, snow covered hills and ocean tides never gets old. The words are perfectly beautiful and yet reveal a sense of poignancy about life. I am sure that many share these same feelings.
The AI algorithm can produce just the right word upon command, but it can never express the words that an artist feels in her heart. And, it could never feel sentimental about a Stevie Nicks song.
