Things That AI Cannot Do – #13 in a series
July 1, 2026

I imagine that if you asked AI to compose a prayer, it could produce a pretty decent one. I would try that right now as an experiment, but I am afraid to see what it might come up with. The power of prayer lies not in the words, but rather in the feelings that they evoke in the heart and soul. That is the part that AI would have a hard time with. Impossible, perhaps….
I think that many of us are more proficient in the art of prayers than we give ourselves credit for. We have little impromptu conversations with God all day long. Words like … Dear God, when will this child ever fall asleep … God, I wish this traffic would move along… God, I wish this heat wave would just let up. We may not realize it, but we are always reaching out to that higher power or whatever we may choose to call it. It is like our second nature to pray or perhaps it is our first.
When we are able to stop to appreciate the beauty in nature, even if it is just a sprig of greenery shooting up through a crack in the pavement, we are uttering a silent prayer. There are no words necessary, just an awareness of the beauty laid out before us is enough.
The days are growing warmer, and summer is surely now upon us. We can walk barefoot in the cool damp morning grass. We can stop to pick a wildflower and inhale its intoxicating scent. We can float effortlessly in the cooling waters of the Atlantic. Our arms are spread free. Our faces are turned towards the healing sun, and the salty waves are splashing gently about us.
Summer time. Just saying those words is its own kind of blessing.
