Things That AI Cannot Do – part five

AI Could Never Watch the Unfolding of Winter – January 9, 2026

AI can calculate the minutes and seconds of time to a minuscule degree, but can it feel sentimental about watching the last of the rose petals fall one by one to the ground until the blossom is bare?  Could it sense the finality that comes with knowing there will be no more summerlike days this year and that there will never be another summer like the one that just passed?  Could it sense the bittersweetness that comes with another season’s passing and the compressed feelings of joy and sadness that come with being human?

The pink rose petals lie forlornly amidst the auburn leaves.  They were once princesses, but their day in the sun is over. The wilting petals mark the passage of time as another season ebbs away.  Their duty now is in feeding the soil for next year’s crop.  AI could never feel the anticipation of those new buds that will form in the spring or the pleasure of a rose’s scent in the vase on the table of a summer’s day.

The seasons change with an inevitability that we know marks our days.  Each day arrives calling for us to do something and to be someone.  Each evening another checkmark on our calendar of life.  Our memories and our dreams are melded together.  We cannot get away from ourselves.  We are what we are – purely human and created for a quiet magnificence.
